Faculty Ethos
We aim to make language learning an exciting and vibrant experience for our pupils through the use of game, song and group activities. We are thorough in our approach to the teaching of grammar and translation as we are intent on giving our pupils the tools needed to independently develop their language skills. We aim to impart our own passion for language and foreign culture onto our pupils and hope that they will leave us with the skills and knowledge necessary to get by in our multicultural world.
Key Stage 3
Most pupils in KS3 will study either French or Spanish. When choosing options in Year 9, pupils who have an aptitude or an interest in languages will be encouraged to continue with the language they have been studying through to GCSE. Through learning language, pupils will also broaden their knowledge of foreign culture and will have the chance to take part in cultural celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo and Bastille Day.

Key Stage 4
Assessment
Unit 1 Listening (25%) : The exam involves listening to spoken French and Spanish and answering questions related to what you have heard. Answers are either in English or in the target language or involve ticking boxes, multiple choice etc.
Unit 2 Speaking (25%): The exam involves describing a photo, taking part in a short role-play and general conversation. Students have 12 minutes to prepare for the photo task and the role-play.
Unit 3 Reading (25%): Students read short and longer texts in French and Spanish and respond to questions by ticking boxes, multiple choice or answering in English or in the target language. Literary texts and translation form part of the exam.
Unit 4 Writing (25%): The exam involves writing short essays and longer essays in the target language. Students get a choice of questions to answer. They also have to translate into either French or Spanish.
Higher or Foundation tiers available. All exams will take place in May / June of Year 11 and are marked by the exam board (AQA).
As well as weekly homework set by the class teacher, we expect that all KS4 pupils take home their yellow vocabulary books and learn at least ten words a week. AQA revision workbooks will be on sale for Year 10 and 11 and pupils are strongly advised to invest in one in order to prepare them for their final exams. We also sell pocket size dictionaries. In order to support your child in their language learning, we ask that you encourage them to do all of the above.

We strongly recommend that all GCSE language pupils invest in the AQA revision workbook for their chosen language. These can be purchased from their class teacher or online. Immersing oneself in the target language is an excellent way to prepare for final exams and controlled assessments. We also use the Duolingo and Memrise apps for which all students will receive a personal log in. Some useful websites:
Specific Equipment
The only specific equipment required for language lessons is a pen, pencil, ruler and your book. You may also find it useful to have a Spanish to English and a French to English dictionary at home and with you at school, although this is not compulsory.
Helpful websites for language learning
www.linguascope.com: This website teaches pupils new vocabulary and there are numerous games for reinforcement.
www.wordreference.com: This is an online dictionary for pupils to use.
www.languagesonline.org.uk: This website is useful for vocabulary and games.
www.bbc.co.uk/schools/bitesize: This can be used by GCSE pupils and contains examples of exam questions in all four skill areas.
www.youtube.co.uk: This tool can be used for language purposes e.g. Weather forecasts in the target language.
